English Improv in Istanbul for A2 and B1 Speakers

English Improv in Istanbul for A2 and B1 Speakers

Can you do an English improv workshop if your English is A2 or B1? What the level asks of you, and where each group fits.

If you are thinking of joining an English improv workshop in Istanbul, the question that comes first is usually about level. Improv means speaking without a script, in real time, with a partner who will not wait for you to find the right word. That sounds like a high bar. In practice the bar is lower than most people expect, and also more specific. This guide explains what improv actually asks of your English, and what to do if you are at A2 or B1.

What improv asks of your English

Improv asks for two things: understanding your partner, and answering. You do not need a large vocabulary or good grammar. You do need to hold an everyday conversation, however imperfectly. If you can express what you want in full sentences, you can play. If you can only use fixed phrases and freeze when they run out, early sessions may be hard.

So the real question is not your level label, but this: when your ready-made phrases run out, can you keep going? Our guide to what B1 English sounds like shows a concrete example.

B1: where improv fits well

At B1 you can keep a conversation going with pauses and corrections. That is a good place to start improv. English Drama Lab runs weekly in Pera and Kadıköy, in groups of up to twelve. You can join any week, and participation is 6 or 12 weeks. Scenes are not scripted; each week sets up a new situation and everyone has to respond. The goal is not perfect English but staying in the scene.

For the full picture of the format, see our improv in English guide and the English improv page.

A2: use a bridge

At A2 you know your basic phrases, but speech stays short and broken. Jumping into a B1 improv group can feel like swimming without a floor. A better route is the A1 to A2 English Drama Lab: A1 and A2 work in the same class, year-round, in Kadıköy and Taksim, two hours a week. Scenes are built so each person plays from their own level. Groups form through pre-registration.

Why the A2 to B1 gap feels so long is explained in A2 to B1: why it takes longer. The short version: what is usually missing is not knowledge but use. See also the beginner English through drama page.

What to expect in the first weeks

The first sessions open with warm-up games for name, rhythm, voice and reaction speed. These work whatever your level, because everyone plays the same game from where they are. Scenes start simple. You may feel clumsy for the first few weeks. The sign of progress is not fluency but how many seconds longer you stay in a scene by week three or four.

Mistakes in the room

In a scene, a mistake does not stop the action. The scene goes on, and so do you. This is the main habit improv trains: continuing after an error. In real conversation, this is exactly what you need.

How to decide

Try this: describe your last weekend in English for two minutes, without stopping. If you can keep going, you are around B1. If you stop after three sentences, you are closer to A2. There is no level test; we ask for your own description and point you to the right group if needed.

Can I join an English improv workshop at A2? Not directly in the B1 group. We suggest the A1 to A2 English Drama Lab first, then moving on as your practice grows.

Do I need acting experience? No. Most people have never been on a stage. The games build step by step.

Can I try one session before committing? Yes. You can join an introduction day first. Ask us about the next one.

Is there a placement test? No. We rely on your own description of your English and the first sessions.
